A sure way to spot an amateur business card is from the size of the text. Feel free to play with the size of your logo, but it is usually best to keep the text size of your contact information to somewhere between 7-10 points depending on the font that you choose. Text this size can appear to be too small on a computer screen, but the eye reads a computer monitor differently than it does a printed piece. If you have any doubts, print a sample at home - but keep in mind that the place you have print your business cards with be using a very high quality print method so the text will be much sharper than what you see printed from home.
Don't forget about your cut line when sizing and placing photos or text. Around 1/4 inch all the way around your card will be cut off after printing. A good way to check yourself when you are done setting up your card is to have your guides turned on, then go ahead and crop your card at the cut lines to check placement. Just be sure to hit your undo button to undo the crop after looking! The printer needs that extra 1/4 inch on there!!
